2009 Message from Paul George, Team 1038 Leadership Council Leader

FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.  Wow, what does that really mean?  For me, it spells out just one word, opportunity.  It’s a unique opportunity for people of all ages to grow to become more than they are today.  It’s an opportunity for a team to do more than they could ever accomplish as individuals.  It’s an opportunity to change the world for the better.

There are many arenas for accomplishing the same thing.  What is different about FIRST?  FIRST believes that the best way to achieve long lasting change for the better is through technology.  Technology cannot solve all the world’s problems.  But, it has made huge improvements.  Do you want to live without electricity, antibiotics, modern surgical techniques, or clean water?  Yet with all our advancements, there are still millions of people struggling to survive without them.  It is only with the development of new technology that we will improve life for everyone on this planet. That is what Team 1038 is about.  Oh yeah, don’t get me wrong.  We love to compete!  And we love to win.  But, the real fun is giving you, the students, a chance to learn that math and science can be fun and exciting.  Unfortunately, not everyone will get a chance to build robots as a career.  But, there are hundreds of other technology jobs that can be just as much fun.

What are we waiting for?  Let’s go!

Paul
